If You Want to Accept Yourself, Let Go Five Things

Accept Yourself
If You Want to Accept Yourself, Let Go of 5 Things.

by Dorothy Wehunt

To accept yourself is to love yourself. It is self-caring or being empathetic to yourself. And It is nourishing yourself. If you want to accept yourself, let go of the five things below:

Comparison and Competition

“Comparison is waste of energy. Every individual is unique with unique talents. Find your passion and live your best life.” Lailah Gifty Akita. (Everyday Power, 2021. Accessed February 20, 2021. 125 Comparison Quotes On Loving Yourself More (2021) (everydaypower.com)

So, focus on your accomplishments and their value to accept yourself. When you do this, you will see the value and power of your strengths. Therefore, you know your value. Hence, you will not need to compare yourself to others. You will compete with yourself. Furthermore, you will have less stress.

This will lead you to become your best self. Judy Garland said, “Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else.” (Ibid.)

Self-Judgment and Self-Criticism

Substitute negative message with positive messages that are accurate or true. Or reframe the negative message to a positive message. When you do this daily, you develop a habit of giving yourself positive feedback to accept yourself.

Accept that “no one” is perfect. All of us are human beings. We all have our imperfections. Think about this – no one is 100% kind, friendly, etc. all the time.

Could Jasmin Morin’s thought help us to see the positive is not being perfect? “No one and nothing is perfect, or we wouldn’t have uniqueness.” (Goodreads, 2021. Accessed February 20, 2021. No One Is Perfect Quotes (10 quotes) (goodreads.com)

And Marilyn Monroe said, “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

Self-Defeating Beliefs

Some people received spoken or unspoken messages such as, “Why can’t you be as smart or friendly as …?” or You’re too…” growing up. They repeated these over and over until they believed them. With self-awareness, you have the ability to reject any limiting beliefs that do not serve your best.

Feelings of Unworthiness

These become evident as guilt, shame, and self-blame. Remember we do the best we can with the level of awareness we have at the time. Therefore, you did your best at the time. Live in the present. If you are focusing on the lessons you learned, you are living in the present. The Past is gone!

If you want to have greater self-esteem and self-confidence, make a shift in your thinking to accept yourself. EACH of us has the ability to do so.
