How to Make “Act as If” Work and Own It -3 Ways

Act as If
Make Act As If Work for You

by Dorothy Wehunt

Most of us have heard of the self-fulfilling prophecy. Or Act as If. “Whatever we expect with confidence becomes our own self-fulfilling prophecy,” said Brian Tracy. (BrainyQuote, 2001-2018, Accessed August 28,2018. https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/brian_tracy_384549?=t_self-fulling_prophecy).

But how many people believe in it or sluff it off, thinking, “It works for others, not me.” Or, “They had what it takes.”

Act as if.

What about the saying “Act as if …”? Could that be the key?

“Believe and Act as if it is impossible to fail.” Charles Kettering, American Inventor. (A-Z Quotes, Accessed January 18, 2021.  TOP 25 QUOTES BY CHARLES KETTERING (of 102) | A-Z Quotes )

And Jordan Belford, in his book The Wolf of Wallstreet, said, “Act as if! Act as if you’re a wealthy man, rich already, and then you’ll surely become rich. As if you have unmatched confidence and then people will surely have confidence in you. Act as if you have unmatched experience and then people will follow your advice. And act as if you are already a tremendous success, and as sure as I stand here today – you will become successful.” (Goodreads, 2021, Accessed January 18, 2021. Quote by Jordan Belfort: “Act as if! Act as if you’re a wealthy man, rich…” (goodreads.com )

However, some people dismiss that too, thinking others have the talent and ability to reach their goals. Thus, they undermine their own strengths and confidence and belief in self. Therefore, they remain stuck where they do not want to be.

Examples of reality lead you to believe.

Yet, history has given us examples of people who put the doubt in question. Some of us who like history have read them or remember them from history class. You may, or may not, recall these also.  Or better, you may know someone who acted if and doing so brought them their desired results.

Act as if and business success

Maybe you have heard of Rockefeller. the founder of Standard Oil. It was the world’s largest oil company at the time. It ended in the 1900’s due to the U.S. Supreme ruling it violated the antitrust laws. Once a creditor came to collect the money Rockefeller owed him. Rockefeller calmly took out his checkbook. Then he asked the creditor if he had rather have a check, cash, or stock in Standard Oil.  The man chose to take stock.

And, Hilton, the found of Hilton hotels, had a reputation for being honest and keeping his word. Thus, he was able to raise only half of the million dollars he needed to build his first-class hotel. But did that stop him? No, he drew up the plans and began building his hotel.

You have heard of Henry Ford, the found of Ford Motor Company.  When creditors came to collect, he was upfront about his cash. But he never mentioned that his cash was most of his assets. So, it was his confident manner also that allowed him to finance and build his company.

Act as if for military success

After Napoleon went in exile the first time, the French army went after him. Did he run or hide? No, he boldly faced them — Napoleon against an entire army. His acting as if led the army to march behind him.

So, the skill or strength they possessed and their ability and/or courage to act confident lead them to success. Either way, it is logical to think they spoke with authority. And that their physical demeanor matched. Straight shoulders and leaning forward! Looking the person in the eye.

What makes Act as if more believable?

And Machal Shull’s insight might help one believe more in ‘act as if’ and apply it to one’s life. She said “Act as if ‘means to apply action. ‘Faking it’ means to be fraudulent. Don’t misconstrue the two. ‘Acting as if’ means you are asserting yourself in action that will manifest in time, action, and belief. Action equal outcome.” (Goodreads, 2021, Accessed January 2021. What is the one caution to take?

However, there is caution one needs to take in using “act as if.” Some people sabotage themselves when they are arrogant, overbearing, rude, and snobbish. Hence, people who think well of self act natural.

Would it be worth it to you and your life to pretend you are confident and act confident to assert yourself? How would it change your life for the better? Pursue your goals? Dreams? Feel good about yourself?

In closing. “Every great accomplishment was believed to be impossible at one time.” Unknown (75 Accomplishment Quotes and Sayings 2018, Accessed January 24, 2021. 75 Accomplishment Quotes and Sayings Point)
